Free Procreate Texture Brushes + How I Use Them in My Illustrations

Want to make your digital illustrations feel more tactile and hand-drawn, without switching to real paper? I created a set of Procreate texture brushes that I use in nearly all my illustrations. 🌧️ Stipples: My favourite texture to use for shading, and adding texture on a smaller scale. Change the size of this brush to dramatically change the size of your stipples.

🌱 Grainy: A grainy texture that works both for small details as well as on a bigger scale for a rougher look. I like to use this grainy texture as an overlay (using blending modes) on top of my art to give it a subtle grainy look.

📰 Halftone Newspaper: A classic halftone pattern to use for shading, or to add interest to your design. Rotate your canvas to change the angle of your halftone brush. I discuss halftones and how to use them in your work in depth in this Skillshare class: Finding Your Style with Textures in Procreate.

🧁 Sprinkles: A fun stamp brush that changes color with every sprinkle. You can layer this brush to create a texture, or use it as decoration. Every new sprinkle will have a slightly different tone.

Cloud Fill: A dusty Procreate texture brush that can be used for filling in shapes, shading and more. Use it in combination with blending modes (like multiply, overlay) for shading.

In this birthday cake illustration, I used all the brushes from this set using a combination of blending modes, masks and clipping masks in Procreate.

The halftone newspaper was used as a background layer to add an interesting texture. I used the grainy brush and stipples to add color and texture to the cake (in yellow and brown shades).

Additionally, I used the grainy brush for shading on top of white, for a grainy texture that make this illustration feel more tactile. The cloud fill has a different look, and works well as shading, too. Lastly, the sprinkles, with its variety in tones, work perfectly as fun sprinkles on top of the cake.
