What makes an illustration feel whimsical and cozy? It’s not just cute shapes or playful characters, it’s the combination of color, texture, and thoughtful composition that makes a drawing feel like it belongs in its own little world.
In my recent interview with animator & illustrator Giulia Martinelli, we explored how to build that kind of atmosphere for whimsical illustrations using simple steps in Procreate.

Here are 3 key takeaways you can apply to your own whimsical illustrations right away:
1: Use color to build a whimsical mood
Whimsy starts with atmosphere, and color is one of the fastest ways to create it. Instead of focusing only on contrast or realism, think in terms of feeling. For example, in cozy winter scenes:
- Warm oranges and soft yellows can suggest light and warmth
- Cool blues, purples or pink tones can create a dreamy backdrop
This kind of palette helps your illustration feel less “literal” and more like a small, magical world. In the color palette for this illustration, I used the contrast of orange and purple to create a whimsical atmosphere:

2: Layer textures to add charm and personality
Whimsical illustrations often feel tactile, almost like you could reach in and touch them. A simple way to achieve this is by layering textures:
- A subtle grain across the whole piece
- Textured brushes for shading
- Slight imperfections inside shapes instead of flat fills
These small imperfections are what give your illustration warmth and personality.

In this piece, shapes are built with a smooth brush. After, I added a speckled background (in purple), filled details with a rough liner brush (like in the teapot), and added light around the candle with a grainy texture.

3: Build whimsy through many small objects
Instead of relying on one complex focal point, you can create a whimsical illustration by combining lots of simple elements. Think of it like building a tiny world that can include things like a mug, a candle, snow globe, a mouse coming out of a teapot, and more.
Each object is simple on its own, but together they create something rich, detailed, and full of storytelling. This approach has a few big benefits:
- It makes the illustration easier to build step by step (pick easy objects to draw)
- It naturally creates visual interest with lots of small intricate details
- And it gives you that “discover something new every time you look” feeling

Bonus: This ‘small objects only’ approach also makes it much easier to add movement to your illustration, which makes it feel even more whimsical. Each object on the shelves was animated separately using easy movements in Procreate Dreams, like the animation above!
